How do gun bans affect non-gun owners?

Gun bans wrongly and wrongfully affect non-gun owners because bans disarm only the law-abiding. Nothing new, until you see how this spreads. As usual, criminal laws do not interfere with crime until after-the-fact; gun control interferes with only the honest and before-the-fact, and then again after-the-fact, often within a system which victimizes constituents twice. Lifting gun bans can enhance crime control and lift government burdens. For some officials, carrying burdens is desirable, but it is an abuse of the law against the interests of the United States.

A few years ago, I wrote a short autobiographical story entitled "The Moment," which was published by KeepAndBearArms.com. It was my first foray into the realm of the Second Amendment rights movement, and I have never looked back since. It was an attempt to explain why the right to keep and bear arms is so critical to me, as an immigrant who came to the United States from the USSR - a communist country, where the concept of freedom and human rights was a foreign one.

But I’ll never forget that day. I’ll never forget how helpless I felt – how demeaned and beaten my parents looked. And I’ll never forget that rifle in my face. At that point, someone had complete power over me and over those I loved. At that moment, we were helpless, disarmed and undefended.

Today, as I write this, I realize how crucial the ability to defend oneself truly is. It’s not about having to justify myself to anyone in power anytime I want to purchase a certain weapon. It’s not about being registered like a common criminal simply because I want to own a gun. It’s not even about being called a “gun nut” or an “NRA freak.”

It’s about the slow, systematic destruction of dignity and strength. It’s about the methodical erosion of our personal defenses. And all of the above are definitive symptoms of that erosion.

For once you’ve taken away a person’s self-respect – once you’ve taken away a person’s dignity – it becomes all the easier to take away his or her means of self-defense. And once that's gone – that’s the precise moment you know you’ve been completely defeated.

How does gun control affect non-gun owners? It takes away their choice. It takes away their ability to defend themselves and their families from criminal thugs or criminal, tyrannical governments. It takes away their dignity, because they cannot assert their rights and have no choice in the matter.

This is why gun rights advocates understand that the Second Amendment protects your rights and is a bulwark against the destruction of all the other freedoms listed in the Bill of Rights.

Yes gun ownership is critical to defending yourself against violent criminals. Yes, self-defense is crucial to protecting your right to life and property. But the choice to own a gun is even more vital to protecting your liberty. The ability to make that choice is the ability to remain free - the ability to pick up arms against a tyrant if you feel it necessary. Once that choice is removed by an authoritarian leech like Ted Kennedy, Hillary Clinton, or Rudy Giuliani, you have nothing left but the weak bleating of your own voice, which can be silenced at any time... and you won't have the means to do anything about it.
